The three exam units
Unit 1 – Financial Mathematics & Numeracy
Personal finance, household budgets, percentages in money contexts, enterprise and real-world numeracy. Calculator allowed.

Strong focus on geometry, probability, number skills and algebraic manipulation without a calculator.

Financial Maths – Percentages, Interest & Money
Core skills for Unit 1: percentage change, simple & compound interest, profit/loss and money problems.
Algebra – Forming & Solving Equations
Linear equations, equations with fractions, simultaneous equations and quadratic equations.
Number – Ratio, Proportion & Percentages
Ratio, direct & inverse proportion, reverse percentages and repeated percentage change.
Geometry Essentials – Angles, Pythagoras & Trigonometry
Key geometry skills tested heavily in Unit 2 and also in Unit 3.
Statistics & Probability
Averages, charts, probability (including tree diagrams) and statistical diagrams.
Standard Form & Indices
Writing numbers in standard form, calculating with standard form, and the laws of indices.
Graphs & Sequences
Straight-line graphs (y = mx + c), nth term of sequences, and an introduction to quadratic graphs.
Area, Volume & Circles
Area of 2D shapes, volume of prisms, surface area and circle formulae – high-frequency exam topics.
Inequalities
Solving linear inequalities, representing solutions on a number line, and double inequalities.
Higher Algebra – Quadratics & Formula
Quadratic formula, completing the square, and solving equations with algebraic fractions – essential Higher skills.
Transformations
Reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement – describing and performing transformations on shapes.
Vectors
Column vectors, adding and subtracting vectors, scalar multiples, magnitude, and simple geometric proofs with vectors.
Bounds & Limits of Accuracy
Error intervals, upper and lower bounds for rounded measurements, and calculations with bounds.
Circle Theorems
The main circle theorems tested at Higher tier: angles in the same segment, centre and circumference, cyclic quadrilaterals, tangent and radius, alternate segment.
Sine Rule, Cosine Rule & Triangle Area
Using the sine and cosine rules in non-right-angled triangles, and the formula Area = ½ab sin C.
Histograms & Cumulative Frequency
Drawing and interpreting histograms (frequency density), cumulative frequency curves, medians and interquartile range.
Probability – Conditional & Venn Diagrams
Venn diagrams, mutually exclusive and independent events, and conditional probability.
Surds
Simplifying surds, expanding brackets with surds, and rationalising the denominator.
Functions & Iteration
Function notation, composite and inverse functions, and iterative methods to solve equations.
Constructions & Loci
Standard ruler-and-compass constructions and loci (sets of points satisfying a rule).
