The curriculum is organised into five Progression Steps. Pick the one that matches you (or your child) and start learning the right content for that stage.
Progression Step 1
Nursery / Reception
Foundation learning through play and exploration.
Progression Step 2
Years 1–3
Building core skills and curiosity.
Progression Step 3
Years 4–6
Deepening understanding and independence.

Secondary foundation – preparing for specialisation.

Years 10–11
Exam readiness and the full Curriculum for Wales (including new GCSEs from 2026).
Six Areas of Learning and Experience
Instead of dozens of separate subjects, the Curriculum for Wales groups learning into six broad Areas. Every school curriculum must cover all of them.
Expressive Arts
Art, music, drama, dance, film and digital media. Developing creative skills, responding as artists and audiences, and creating original work.
Health and Well-being
Physical health, mental and emotional well-being, healthy relationships, decision-making and social influences.
Humanities
History, geography, religion, values and ethics (RVE), business studies and social studies. Understanding the world past, present and future.
Languages, Literacy and Communication
Welsh, English, international languages and literature. Building strong communication skills in multiple languages.
Mathematics and Numeracy
Number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and financial literacy. Solving problems and thinking mathematically.
Science and Technology
Biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, design & technology and engineering. Understanding how the world works and designing solutions.
