WJEC Double Award Maths 2026 – what changed and how to revise
From September 2025 teaching, WJEC combined Mathematics and Numeracy into one Double Award GCSE for Wales. You sit three units and come out with two grades. This page is the map. The lessons underneath it are the practice.
What actually changed
There is no longer a separate Numeracy GCSE and a separate Mathematics GCSE. One qualification covers both. Financial mathematics is now a named part of Unit 1, not an optional add-on. Questions are set in real-life contexts more often than on the old papers, and you are expected to show working even when a calculator is allowed.
The award is a double grade. A strong Unit 3 can lift the pair; a weak Unit 1 on money and percentages can drag both grades down, because that unit is 30% of the qualification.
The three units
- Unit 1 – Financial mathematics and numeracy (30%). Calculator allowed. Percentages, interest, budgets, profit and loss, and real-world number. Start here if money questions throw you.
- Unit 2 – Non-calculator (30%). Geometry, probability, number skills and algebra without a calculator. Speed and accuracy matter more than on the other papers.
- Unit 3 – Calculator-allowed (40%). The longest paper. Harder algebra, statistics, geometry and multi-step problems. This is where Higher tier pulls away.
A revision order that works
- Percentages, multipliers, simple and compound interest.
- Ratio, reverse percentages, and forming equations from words.
- Linear equations, then simultaneous and quadratics if you are Higher.
- Area, volume, angles, and the non-calculator geometry you keep missing.
- A full practice paper under timed conditions, then mark it against the scheme.
Do not start with the topic you already like. Start with the one that loses marks on every paper you have sat.
Common mistakes
- Using 0.2 for 2%, or 1.2 for a 20% decrease. Write the multiplier first.
- Forgetting that compound interest compounds on the new amount, not the original.
- Solving a quadratic without rearranging to = 0.
- Giving a money answer to the nearest pound when the question asks for pence.
