Transactional Forms – Letter, Article, Report

Section B tasks often specify a form. Layout and register must fit – a report should not read like a diary.

Formal letter

• Your address / date (as required) • Recipient’s address if formal • Dear Sir/Madam or named person → Yours faithfully / sincerely • Clear purpose in first paragraph • Polite but firm tone for complaints or requests

Article

• Headline • Opening that hooks and states the angle • Short paragraphs; subheadings optional • Can be livelier than a report; still organised • Ending that summarises or calls to action

Report

• Title and often subheadings • Factual, structured, less personal • May include findings / recommendations • Formal vocabulary; avoid slang

Practice questions

1. Yours faithfully vs yours sincerely?

2. How does a report differ from an article?
