Writing a Speech
A speech is written to be heard. It needs a clear stance, rhythm, and devices that work out loud – not just on the page.
Speech structure
1. **Hook** – question, bold claim, short anecdote
2. **Stance** – state your position early
3. **Points** – 2–3 developed arguments with examples
4. **Address the other side** – briefly, then push back
5. **Call to action** – what should the audience do or believe now?
Devices that work aloud
• Rhetorical questions
• Rule of three
• Repetition of a key phrase
• Direct address (“you”, “we”)
• Short punchy sentences mixed with longer ones
• Memorable one-liners
Worked example
Weak ending vs strong ending?
Solution: Weak: “That is why I think phones should be banned.” Strong: “Put the phones away for one hour a day – and give attention back to the people in the room.”
