Evaluating Texts
Evaluation is more than summary. You judge how successfully the writer achieves their purpose, using evidence and methods.
What evaluation needs
1. A **clear judgement** (e.g. highly effective / partially successful)
2. **Reasons** linked to purpose and audience
3. **Methods** (language, structure, tone)
4. **Evidence** from the text
5. Comment on **impact on the reader**
Useful evaluative phrases
“This is effective because…”
“The writer successfully conveys…”
“However, the argument weakens when…”
“Overall, the text persuades the reader that…”
Avoid only retelling the plot or listing techniques without judgement.
