Comparing Texts
Comparison questions need links both ways. Don’t write about Text A then Text B with no connection – interweave points.
What to compare
• Ideas and themes
• Viewpoints and attitudes
• Tone and mood
• Methods (language and structure)
• How successfully each text achieves its purpose
Useful comparison language
Similarly, in the same way, likewise…
In contrast, whereas, on the other hand, unlike…
Both texts…; Only Text A…; Text B goes further by…
Point about A + evidence → link → point about B + evidence → joint effect.
Practice questions
1. Why interweave comparison rather than write two separate halves?
2. Name two things you can compare.
