Narrative & Description in Welsh
Creative Welsh writing scores when the story is clear, tense is controlled, and detail is specific – not when the plot is huge.
Simple story shape
1. Setting / situation
2. Something happens (problem or surprise)
3. Reaction
4. Short ending
One main event is enough for an exam response.
Language focus
• Decide past or present and stay consistent
• Time markers: ddoe, wedyn, ar ôl hynny, yn sydyn
• Sensory detail: beth welais i, clywais i, teimlais i
• Avoid translating English idioms word-for-word
Worked example
Upgrade ‘Roedd hi’n braf’?
Solution: Add concrete detail: “Roedd yr haul yn tywynnu a’r plant yn chwerthin yn y parc.”
Practice questions
1. How many main events are ideal in a short exam narrative?
2. Give two Welsh time markers.
