Reading Welsh Texts – Meaning & Opinion
GCSE Welsh reading asks what the text says, what it suggests, and what the writer thinks. Support answers with short evidence from the Welsh text.
What examiners look for
• Accurate understanding of key points
• Inference from clues (not only word-for-word copy)
• Clear statement of opinion / attitude where asked
• Short quotations or close references in Welsh
Method
1. Read the question carefully (what type of answer?)
2. Scan for relevant lines
3. Answer in clear language (Welsh or as the paper requires)
4. Add a short quote to prove the point
Worked example
Text says someone ‘gwrthododd siarad a cherddodd i ffwrdd’. What can you infer?
Solution: They may be angry, upset or unwilling to continue – refusal to speak and walking away suggest the conversation is over.
