RS Exam Skills – Teachings & Evaluation
RS marks reward accurate use of beliefs/teachings and clear evaluation – not only personal opinion.
Using teachings
• Name the religion/source clearly (e.g. Bible, Qur’an, Jesus’ teaching)
• Link the teaching to the issue in the question
• Explain what it means in practice – don’t only quote
• Compare different views within or between religions when relevant
Evaluation structure
For “discuss / evaluate / to what extent” questions:
1. Point for one side + teaching/evidence
2. Point for another side + teaching/evidence
3. Weigh up (strengths/limits)
4. Clear judgement linked to the question
Avoid listing beliefs without saying how far you agree or why one view is stronger.
Worked example
What makes an RS judgement strong?
Solution: It answers the question directly, refers to arguments already made, and shows why one view is more convincing (or why the issue is complex).
