Unseen Poetry
Unseen poetry rewards a calm method. You will not know the poem – but you know how to read for meaning, methods and response.
First pass
1. Read once for overall sense (subject and mood)
2. Note shifts – where does the poem change?
3. Underline striking words, images, repetitions
4. Ask: who is speaking? to whom? about what?
Methods to notice
• Imagery and sensory detail
• Word choice (simple vs intense)
• Sound (alliteration, rhyme, rhythm)
• Structure (stanzas, enjambment, end-stopped lines)
• Tone (bitter, tender, ironic, celebratory)
Worked example
What if I don’t understand every line?
Solution: Write about what you *can* support. A clear comment on one strong image plus structure often scores better than vague guesses on every line.
