You do not need to understand every archaic word on first sight. Focus on imagery, contrast, and what a speech reveals about character and conflict.
Ways in
• Read the speech for overall emotion first
• Spot repeated images (blood, light/dark, disease, animals)
• Note questions, commands, exclamations
• Soliloquy = character alone with the audience – often honest
• Verse vs prose can signal status or mental state
Quoting Shakespeare
Keep quotations short. Explain the image in modern clear English, then link to character or theme.
Context (when useful): power, gender expectations, religion, fate – only if it helps the point.
