Total war reached into everyday life. The home front is a major part of Depression, War and Recovery studies for Wales and Britain.
Key features
• **Evacuation** – children moved from target cities; mixed experiences
• **Rationing** – fair shares, black market, dig for victory
• **Air raids / Blitz** – shelters, ARP, disruption (and relatively fewer raids in some Welsh areas, more in others)
• **Women’s roles** – industry, services, land army; changing expectations
• **Government control** – propaganda, censorship, direction of labour
Wales angle
Wales hosted evacuees, contributed heavily to industry and the armed forces, and experienced bombing in places such as Swansea. Rural and industrial experiences differed.
