Recovery & the Welfare State (1945–51)
After 1945 many people expected a fairer Britain. The Labour government introduced major reforms while the country still faced shortages and debt.
Key reforms
• **NHS** (1948) – free at the point of use healthcare

Limits of recovery
• Rationing continued into the late 1940s
• Economic constraints and war debt
• Not all problems of the 1930s industrial areas disappeared overnight
